AC warranty in India: what a ten-year compressor cover actually means
Contents (7)
« 10 years warranty » is printed on the box in the largest type the marketing team could justify. It is also the least understood sentence in the entire purchase. Owners read it as a decade of free repairs; it usually means one specific sealed component is replaced free of charge, while everything around it — the labour to fit it, the refrigerant to recharge the system, sometimes the transport — is billed to you.
None of this is a scandal. It is a normal structure, common across the industry and printed clearly enough in the warranty card that nobody reads. Understanding it before you buy changes which machine you choose; understanding it before you call changes what you are willing to pay.
The three layers of a typical Indian AC warranty
Most room air conditioners sold in India carry a layered warranty rather than a single period. The exact durations vary by brand, model and the promotional offer running that season, so the warranty card in your box is the only authority — but the shape is consistent:
| Layer | Common duration on inverter splits | What it typically means |
|---|---|---|
| Whole unit, comprehensive | Around 1 year (promotional offers extend this on some ranges) | Defective parts repaired or replaced, usually with labour included |
| Printed circuit board (PCB) | Commonly around 5 years | The control board itself, typically parts-only after year one |
| Compressor | Commonly around 10 years on inverter models | The compressor as a part; labour, gas and transport usually chargeable |
The crucial distinction hiding in that table is comprehensive versus parts-only. A comprehensive warranty covers the component and the work of fitting it. A parts warranty hands you a free component and an invoice for everything else. In the tenth year, a compressor replacement under warranty can still cost a meaningful sum in labour and refrigerant — worth having, but not free.
Ask one question at the counter and write the answer down: after the first year, is labour included? Two machines advertising identical headline periods can differ substantially on this, and it is a more useful comparison than most of the feature list. It matters less, though, than the running cost the star label predicts — that arithmetic is in our guide to BEE star ratings and ISEER.
What is generally not covered
Exclusion lists are broadly similar across brands. The recurring items:
- Consumables and cosmetic parts — filters, remote handsets, plastic mouldings, panels, and anything scratched or discoloured in normal use.
- Routine servicing — the seasonal cleaning every machine needs is maintenance, not a defect. Brands sell it separately, and the rhythm is in our AC maintenance guide.
- Gas top-ups — refrigerant is generally chargeable, except where it is being replaced as part of a covered coil or compressor repair. A sealed system does not consume gas, so a genuine loss means a leak, which is what should actually be diagnosed. Our guide to gas refilling explains when a top-up is even the right answer.
- Damage from supply problems — voltage fluctuation, lightning, spikes and surges are commonly excluded, which is precisely the risk that makes a stabiliser a live question in many parts of the country.
- Installation-related failures — a circuit contaminated because it was never vacuum-evacuated, a pipe run beyond the rated length, an outdoor unit boxed into a space with no airflow. The placement decisions behind these are in our guide to where the outdoor unit goes.
- Unauthorised repair — once a local technician has opened the sealed refrigerant circuit or changed a board, the manufacturer will usually decline the claim on that system.
- Rodent and pest damage, water ingress, fire, and use outside domestic conditions — a residential model running as commercial cooling in a shop or server room is a frequent, and frequently refused, claim.
Keeping a claim valid
Warranty disputes rarely turn on the fault itself. They turn on paperwork and on who touched the machine. A short discipline protects a decade of cover:
- Buy through an authorised channel. Grey-market and unofficially imported units can fall outside Indian service networks entirely.
- Keep the invoice and the serial number. Photograph the rating plate on the outdoor unit and the invoice on day one and store both where you will find them in year nine.
- Register the product if the brand asks for registration within a stated window, especially where an extended comprehensive offer is conditional on it.
- Use an authorised installer. Several manufacturers make correct installation an explicit warranty condition, and installation by the brand’s own network also removes the argument about who caused a leak.
- Keep service records. Dated receipts for cleaning show the machine was maintained, which defuses the most common refusal ground.
- Do not let anyone open the sealed circuit casually. One informal gas charge can end the compressor cover that was the reason you chose the model.
Warranty is not an AMC
The two are routinely confused, and they solve different problems.
| Warranty | Annual maintenance contract | |
|---|---|---|
| What it covers | Defects in material or workmanship | Scheduled servicing, sometimes parts and gas depending on the contract |
| Who provides it | The manufacturer | Brand service arm or an independent firm |
| Cost | Included in the purchase | Paid annually; indicative, and it varies widely by city and scope |
| Typical value | Protects against a rare, expensive failure | Ensures the routine work actually happens |
Read an AMC quote for two things before signing: whether it is « comprehensive » (parts and gas included) or « labour only », and how many visits per year it guarantees. In a dusty inland city a two-visit contract has obvious value; in a mild climate with one short cooling season it may not. Either way, an AMC does not extend the manufacturer’s warranty, and the manufacturer’s warranty does not deliver the servicing.
Extended warranties: when they earn their price
Retailers and brands both sell extended comprehensive cover, usually adding two to four years of parts-and-labour protection. Whether it pays comes down to two things: the price as a share of the machine cost, and what actually fails on modern inverter units. The expensive failures are the compressor — already covered for a long period — and the control boards, which are the genuine reason to consider extending, particularly where the supply is unstable or the coastal air is aggressive. The inverter drive electronics that make these machines efficient are also what makes them costly to repair, a trade-off explained in our guide to how inverter ACs work.
Read the extension document for exclusions before assuming it mirrors the original cover: some extended plans are parts-only, cap the number of claims, or require the annual service to have been done through the brand.
If a claim is refused
Take the refusal in writing, with the reason stated. Escalate first inside the brand: the service centre, then the regional customer care escalation, then the brand’s grievance officer. Keep job sheet numbers, dates and the technician’s report; a claim supported by documents is settled far more often than one argued by phone.
If the internal route fails and you believe the refusal is unfair, consumers in India can approach the National Consumer Helpline and, where warranted, file before a consumer commission under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019. Deficiency of service and unfair contract terms both fall within that framework. Before going that far, be honest about the cause: a machine that has been serviced by unauthorised hands, or installed into a space with no airflow, is a weak case however frustrating the outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Does a 10-year compressor warranty mean 10 years of free repairs?
No. It generally means the compressor as a component is replaced free of charge for that period. Labour, refrigerant and transport are commonly billed unless the warranty card explicitly says « comprehensive ». Whole-unit comprehensive cover is usually the shortest layer, often around a year, sometimes extended by a promotional offer on specific ranges.
Is a gas refill covered under warranty?
Usually not by itself, because a sealed circuit should not lose refrigerant. Where the gas is being replaced as part of a covered repair — a leaking coil or a replaced compressor — it is often included. Where the machine has simply been found low on charge, expect to pay, and expect a leak test rather than a repeat top-up every season.
Does installing an AC through a local technician void the warranty?
It can, and it frequently complicates claims even where it does not void them outright. Several manufacturers make installation by authorised personnel a condition, and a failure traceable to poor installation — moisture in the circuit, a bad flare, insufficient airflow around the outdoor unit — is an exclusion in most warranty documents. The safest route is the brand’s own installation, with the slip filed alongside the invoice.
Is the warranty transferable if I sell the AC?
It depends on the brand, and on documentation. Some manufacturers tie cover to the original invoice and purchaser; others follow the unit serial number. If you are buying used, ask for the original invoice and the warranty card, then confirm transferability with the brand rather than the seller — one of the checks in our guide to buying a second-hand AC in India.
