Heat pump vs air conditioner: the real decision framework
In cooling mode, a heat pump IS an air conditioner — same compressor, same coils, same SEER2 test. The decision is entirely about winter: a heat pump adds a reversing valve and heating capability for typically $1,000–$3,000 over an equivalent AC, and the question is whether your heating situation pays that back.
